Using Harro
What each part of the site does, and how to reach it. Reading is free and needs no account; an account adds the parts that are yours.
Reading the news
The news page is every story we collect, newest first. It opens on the last 24 hours — what is new — and you can widen that with the When row: Anytime, or the last three days, this week or this month. Narrow it further by category, by subject tag, or to a single publisher, and search the headlines with the box at the top. The filters compose, so choosing a category keeps the window and the search you were already in.
Every card names the outlet and links back to the original story on their own site. Where the same event was covered by several outlets, the card says so and links to the comparison.
Channels
The channels directory lists every publisher we carry, grouped by the kind of news they run. Open one to read only its stories. With an account, Follow a channel to add it to your own feed; you can follow as many as you like and change your mind any time.
Your account
Creating an account is free and unlocks the parts of the site that are yours: a feed of only the channels you pick, alerts, bookmarks, your reading history, and Harro. You can sign up with an email and password or with Google. When you first sign in with an empty feed we show a quick channel picker so you leave with something to read.
My Feed
My Feed is the same news page, narrowed to the channels you follow. Everything personal lives under this tab: My Channels (what you follow, and a place to mute a channel on the mixed news page without unfollowing it), Bookmarked (stories you saved to come back to), and History (what you have read, in the order you read it).
Alerts
Save a search as an alert and the site watches for new stories matching it. When one arrives, the bell in the header lights up. It is the way to follow a running story or a subject that crosses several publishers without checking back yourself.
Pulse
Pulse is what the site makes of the feeds it collects. It groups stories about the same event so you can read across outlets at once, profiles who published what (Outlets), and tracks what publishers quietly changed after posting (Revisions). Schedule is prompts worked over that coverage — analysis of the shared corpus, saved to your account.
The map
The map is a world view of where the headlines are pointing. Each dot is a place named in the tracked press, sized by how many stories mention it; the busiest are your current hotspots. Click a dot, or a place in the list beside it, to read the stories behind it.
Analysis
Analysis is the aggregate view, open to everyone: who is publishing the most, how concentrated the coverage is, which subjects dominate, and how output moves through the day. Every panel answers over the same window, which you choose at the top.
Harro, the assistant
Harro answers questions about your own feed and nothing else — it is given your stories and told to work from those alone. Ask it what happened in a subject today, or to pull together how a story developed. Anything a model writes is marked where it appears, and there is a monthly allowance of tokens shown on your profile.
The guided tour
Signed in, a short guided tour walks you around the header with thought bubbles the first time you visit. You can take it again whenever you like from the profile page.
