OpenAI acquires video platform ‘Multi’ and analytics database firm ‘Rockset’

OpenAI has acquired the remote collaboration videoconferencing platform Multi, according to a blog post. This comes a few days after OpenAI announced its acquisition of ‘Rockset,’ a real-time analytics database that provides data indexing and search capabilities.

Multi announced that it has closed new team sign-ups and that currently active teams can use the app until July 24, 2024, after which all user data will be deleted. OpenAI has not yet confirmed the acquisition publicly.

While OpenAI mentioned in its blog post that Rockset’s team will join the company, TechCrunch’s sources revealed that OpenAI’s deal with Multi is “technically an acqui-hire” and that Multi’s team of around five people will join OpenAI.

This becomes important given that OpenAI’s revision of its usage policy, which removed the explicit exemption of its models for military and warfare purposes had cropped as a cause for concern. Additionally, it also confirmed its partnership with the US’s Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) earlier in January. [Read]
    • OpenAI announced the formation of a ‘Safety and Security Committee.’ This came after core members like co-founder and chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, and Head of Alignment, Jan Leike, resigned, highlighting how the company was privileging “shiny products” over safety processes and crucial research. • A former OpenAI employee recently alleged that he was circulating a memo raising security concerns about AI to the company’s board, which he also shared with three external researchers for feedback. [Read]
    • In April, OpenAI hired its first employee in India. [Read]
