Event announcement: ‘Governing AI Models’, July 11, 2024

MediaNama invites you to apply to attend our roundtable discussion on ‘Governing AI Models’ where we will look at which aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) need regulation, the approach India should adopt for said regulation, and how India can develop a conducive environment for AI development and deployment.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a transformative technology with the potential to revolutionize various sectors, including healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and more. However, the deployment of AI can be hindered by regulatory uncertainties and challenges. Issues related to claims of liability, ownership of AI-generated content, and addressing potential harms must be meticulously managed to foster an environment conducive to AI growth and innovation. Regulatory uncertainty in India can impact what Indian entrepreneurs build, and perhaps even where they build it.

Even before we look into the regulatory hurdles, we first need to understand the term AI and what it entails. This will help ensure that the regulatory policies designed for the technology accurately address its intricacies.

Please register to participate in the event by filling out the form here

Note: Registration doesn’t guarantee participation. We are prioritising participation from those building AI tools and products.

    Date: Friday, July 11, 2024

Time: 1:30- 5:30 (lunch will start 12:30 onwards)

Venue: Will be announced shortly, but this will be in central Delhi

    What will we discuss?

When one thinks of AI, the emphasis is often placed exclusively on generative AI models. However, the term actually encompasses a range of technologies from business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) solutions to AI as a service (AI SaaS), AI influencers, and AI outputs. This event will cover the different technologies that fall under the purview of ‘AI’ and how regulations need to be tailored to them. It will look at how liability needs to be understood in the context of AI at three separate levels— the developer, the deployer and the end user.

The event will go into the various approaches India could consider adopting to regulating AI and will look at the gaps present in existing regulations that need to be filled by a dedicated AI governance framework.

The following broad themes will be discussed during the event—

    • Classification of AI (different types of technologies, types of deployment and types of output)
    • Applicability/Adaptability of existing regulatory frameworks and the identification of regulatory gaps
    • Regulatory considerations, and what should apply to whom and why
    • Identifying how liability should be distributed across developers and different users
    • Approaches to regulation and the need for a separate AI act
    • The potential need for a sovereign fund for AI development
    • Enabling frameworks for AI in India
    • Regulatory sandboxes and their role in AI development
    • How self-regulation should be factored into the regulatory framework

    Why should you attend?

Here are 5 reasons why, if you’re in technology/policy, you must consider attending MediaNama discussions:

    1. Share your point of view and get instant feedback: At MediaNama discussions you get to share your point of view, instead of being talked to by a panel: over 60% of a MediaNama discussion is interactive and focused on debating issues with the participants in the roomful of an audience curated for relevance.
    2. Meet others working on the same subject: we have dedicated networking time at MediaNama discussions, where you can meet and engage with others working on the same subject, and get a sense of what’s happening behind the scenes.
    3. Hear a point you hadn’t considered: We curate our participants for a diversity of perspectives, with people working on the same issue, but coming from a different background: hear not just from policy wonks, but also technologists, founders, people working with lawmakers, among others. There’s always another way of looking at something.
    4. Outcome focused: At the end of each session, one of the key questions we consider is a wishlist: what should change, why, and how?
    5. Breadth and depth of understanding: At MediaNama we are focused on providing our readers and attendees with both the depth and breadth of understanding of technology policy. We work hard to determine the probing questions that lend themselves to a deeper understanding of issues, discuss principles, and bring out perspectives that you might not have considered. You can ask questions too. Sometimes the questions are more important than the answer.

    • Registration does not guarantee attendance. In case you fit our mandate for the intended audience, we’ll send you a confirmation before 9 July 2024.
    • Your contact information will never be shared with anyone outside of MediaNama.

We are also hosting an online discussion on fact-checking and combating misinformation on July 3. You can look at the details of the event here.
