Snapdeal and IT Ministry’s Bhashini Sign an MoU With the Intent to Expand Digital Inclusion

E-commerce platform Snapdeal has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the IT Ministry’s language translation platform Bhashini. According to a report by the Economic Times, this partnership will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance digital inclusivity.

Launched as part of the National Language Translation Mission (NLTM), Bhashini was announced by the Indian government in the 2021-22 budget with the goal of improving access to online services in local Indian languages. According to the project’s website, Bhashini aims to harness AI and emerging language technologies (such as GPT) to provide all Indians “easy access to the Internet and digital services in their own language, and increase the content in Indian languages.” It functions as an open-data and open-source software and claims to be capable of text and video translation.

    Bhashini’s previous partnerships:

Bhashini signed an MoU with the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) in October last year. The intent behind this partnership was to extend the reach of digital financial services to users in their native tongues. Similarly, in January this year, Bhashini signed an MoU with the business automation platform UiPath. Bhashini is also being used by Microsoft’s generative AI chatbot Jugalbandi, which has been developed to assist people with accessing information on government schemes, facilities, and procedures in India.

In an interview with MoneyControl, Bhashini’s CEO Amitabh Nag, said that the platform was working on creating some proof of concepts (PoCs) with the fintech sector.
