Meta Rolls out “Meta Verified” feature for WhatsApp Business in India, Brazil and other Countries

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the rollout of “Meta Verified” for WhatsApp Business in India, Brazil, Indonesia and Columbia, at Meta’s Annual Business Messaging Conference ‘Conversations’, Business Standard reported. Meta Verified would have a verification process in place to grant badges to companies that they could then display on their channel and WhatsApp page. Meta claims this could help reduce fraud and assure users that they interact only with genuine businesses. Additionally, Zuckerberg stated that Meta would introduce Meta AI chats into conversations with consumers and also provide businesses with an AI assistant to create ads for Meta-owned Instagram and Facebook. This advertising feature is currently being tried out in several countries, including Indonesia and Mexico.

What are the Features of Meta Verified?

Meta’s VP, Business Messaging, Nikhil Srinivasan, stated that the verification badges and AI tools provided by Meta to companies could prevent impersonation attempts as well as spam calls by ensuring that companies only reach out to interested customers. According to Meta executives, Meta Verified brings with it new features such as the ability to make voice calls on the business platform, which they believe would help make bigger purchases or resolve complex issues that are easier to settle over call. Additionally, Meta Verified, according to the tech company, is also working on a feature which will let AI respond to the most common queries asked by users to business owners.

Some Context on Meta’s New Announcement

Meta had initially launched the Verified Initiative in February 2023, but back then it was limited only to Facebook and Instagram users in Australia and New Zealand and businesses were not eligible to use it. Given Meta’s usage of government-issued ID cards to verify users’ identities, there were also concerns raised about data privacy, although this could reduce impersonation attempts as claimed by Meta.
