Apple Integrates ChatGPT into iOS, iPadOS, and macOS

What’s the news: Apple announced the integration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT into experiences within iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, “allowing users to access ChatGPT’s capabilities—including image and document understanding—without needing to jump between tools,” as per a blog post by the AI company. The integration is part of Apple Intelligence, the company’s personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

“The ChatGPT integration, powered by GPT-4o, will come to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS later this year. Users can access it for free without creating an account, and ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts and access paid features right from these experiences,” said the blog post.

    ChatGPT integrated in Apple tools

ChatGPT is available in Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools to help users generate content. Similarly, users can use ChatGPT image tools to generate images in a wide variety of styles to complement what they are writing.

“[With] Writing Tools built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps,” said Apple’s blog post.

    Siri learns contextualization

According to Apple, Siri will be able to deliver intelligence tailored to the user and their on-device information. As an example, Apple said that a user can say, “Play that podcast that Jamie recommended,” and Siri will locate and play the episode, without the user having to remember whether it was mentioned in a text or an email. While Siri could read your messages earlier as well, the AI integration means that Siri can now contextualise the messages it previously had access to.

“With onscreen awareness, Siri will be able to understand and take action with users’ content in more apps over time,” said Apple in the post.

Companies say users asked before using data

With regards to privacy safeguards, companies stated that user requests when accessing Siri and the tools are not stored by OpenAI, and users’ IP addresses are obscured. When asking questions to Siri, users are asked if their queries can be sent to ChatGPT along with related documents or photos. Users can also choose to connect their ChatGPT account, which means their data preferences will apply under ChatGPT’s policies.
