    Free Speech or Defamation? Dr Abby Philips’ Social Media Content Under Legal Lens

    Recently, the Uttar Pradesh police sent a legal notice to microblogging platform X regarding the handle @liverdoc run by Dr Abby Philips who claims to combat health related misinformation on the platform. The police alleged that the content posted by Liverdoc or Dr Abby Philips violated provisions of the Information Technology Act. Earlier in May, the RaeBareli police in Uttar Pradesh had also filed an FIR against Dr. Philips after a complaint was filed alleging that the doctor has been trying to “defame AYUSH and the Homeopathy system of treatment”. 

    The issue has triggered a debate about legitimate speech, review or criticism of certain products or practices and the scope of defamation provisions under law.
