Hero MotoCorp Joins ONDC to Boost Hyperlocal Sales of Motorcycle Parts

Hero MotoCorp has joined the government-supported Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), claiming to be the first automobile company to provide its services on the network, as per a press release issued on May 13, 2024.

The scooter and motorcycle manufacturer said that it would initially offer two-wheeler parts, accessories and merchandise on the ONDC network. Customers will be able to buy Hero Genuine Parts through any buyer apps on the network such as Paytm and Mystore. The company aims to expedite order processing and hyperlocal deliveries by enhancing reach through the ONDC network.

ONDC is a set of protocols that connects buyers and sellers. Sellers can list seller-side apps on the network and buyers can use buyer-side apps to access the products. ONDC covers a diverse range of e-commerce categories including grocery, electronics, fashion, home appliances, beauty, insurance, and mobility among others. Companies that have joined ONDC in the recent past:

Ride-hailing services have particularly popularised the use of ONDC with companies like Uber and Ola joining the network, alongside ticketing services by Chennai Metro, Namma Yatri, and RedBus. Paytm is also planning to enter the mobility sector by offering auto-rickshaw rides in cities like Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai, according to a MoneyControl report. Paytm’s ride-hailing feature is still in testing mode and visible only to some users, as per the report.

When it comes to the payments sector, Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM), to challenge Phonepe and Google Pay’s dominance, will soon join ONDC to provide a variety of products through ONDC, according to a Business Standard report.

Additionally, the Chief Executive of ONDC T Koshy, in an interview to the Economic Times, has indicated his plans to onboard Indian news publishers to offer subscriptions to Indian magazines through their own seller app or existing sellers on the ONDC network.

Plans to promote the use of ONDC also found space in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The BJP wants to integrate women self-help groups with ONDC and encourage small traders and MSMEs to adopt and expand their businesses on the network.
