Google launches Wallet in India; To work with Flipkart, MakeMyTrip, others: Know all about it

Google on Wednesday launched its Wallet app for the Indian market. The company, in a blog post, said the service was being made available for android users in India with an aim to provide a “fast, secure access to everyday essentials” – including but not limited to, boarding passes, event tickets, IDs, gift cards, and more.

Google claimed to have partnered with 20 Indian brands, starting out, including Flipkart, Air India and Air India Express, MakeMyTrip, PVR and more.

    How does it work?

Android users can use the app to create and store any ticket by scanning a QR code, barcode, or a link shared through Gmail. The app will also allow users to store public transport tickets and let them create passes from images that contain a bar/QR code, such as boarding passes, parking receipts and metro tickets.

In the loyalty and gift cards domain, the release noted that Google was tying up with Flipkart (Supercoins), Dominos, Shoppers Stop and other platforms to make it easy for users to store and use digital copies of their rewards through loyalty program enablers like Pinelabs, EasyRewardz etc.

    Not a Google Pay replacement:

The company stresses clearly that Google Wallet is positioned as a resource aimed at non-payment use cases, unlike Google Pay, used primarily by users for transactions and manage finances.

According to a Techcrunch report, even though Google did, in February this year, replace Google Pay in the US with the Wallet app, it has no plans to do so in India at the moment.

“Google Pay is not going anywhere. Google Pay is our primary payments use case”, the report quoted Ram Papatla, General Manager and India engineering lead for Android at Google, as saying.

The push into the digital wallet space makes sense for Google in India, where Android dominates with a 93% market share among smartphones. However, Google is expected to face competition from the likes of Samsung Wallet, Apple Wallet for iPhone users, and services like WhatsApp which also offer ticket storage capabilities.
