Govt Asks Quick Commerce Players To Prove 10 minute Delivery Or Change Ads

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has asked quick-commerce players like Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, Blinkit and Big Basket to prove that they deliver in “10 minutes or less”, as claimed in their advertisements, according to a report by Moneycontrol. The CCPA, which is part of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, has asked quick-commerce businesses to share their median delivery time across cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. The watchdog agency also plans to meet with executives from these companies, in order to come up with customer protection guidelines in cases when orders are delayed.

The government wants to ensure that the advertising claims of the companies are accurate and do not mislead customers. The government is also providing some leeway to the delivery services and is willing to accept a median delivery time of up to 14 minutes but any delay beyond that would require companies to change their advertising message.

Rising complaints against delivery platforms causing this action?

These steps have been taken due to a rise in customer complaints about delivery times on such platforms and a lack of clarity on refunds and compensation for delayed orders. While companies are not being asked to make any changes for now, if they fail to show a median delivery time of 14 minutes or less, they will be required to change their advertising to reflect that.

Quick commerce is one of India’s fastest growing platforms and may grow by 10-15 times by 2025, reaching a market size of close to $5.5 Billion, according to industry reports. However, the industry has also been criticised for untenable unit-economics.
