Paying homage to Nike’s famous Airport 1998 World Cup ad, the nation’s most-loved carrot makes a glorious comeback in a teaser for the supermarket’s festive ad campaign.
Aldi is leaning into the anticipation surrounding this year’s Christmas World Cup with an ad that once again features Kevin the Carrot and co for the sixth consecutive year.
The teaser spot from Aldi’s long-time partner McCann is called ‘Feast of Football’. It shows the veggie family waiting in the airport lounge for their ‘PeasyJet’ flight. Kevin is reading the newspaper headlines, as he discusses the football event with his wife Katie. Showing his distaste for the tournament happening over the holidays, he scrunches up the paper into a ball and throws it over his shoulders, only for some familiar sports stars to use it for a kickabout.
A lemon-shaped Ronaldi pops up over Kevin’s shoulder to say ‘hello’ before passing the ball to ‘Messy’, who dribbles it around the airport chairs, spilling cups of coffee as he goes. The ball then gets goes from Messi to MmmBap to Roy Bean. Poor Kevin tries to keep up, but his fitness isn’t the best.
As the game continues and the characters Macaroony, Beth Swede and Marrowdona also make an appearance. Finally, the ball comes to Kevin and he sadly misses the shot, and also his flight to Paris.
The ad ends with a nod to the iconic ‘Home Alone’ scene when Catherine O’Hara realizes her son has been left behind. It’s the first spot of a campaign that will evolve as the tournament commences.
Adam Zavalis, marketing director at Aldi UK said: “Christmas celebrates the joy of being with loved ones and this year more than ever we all need a bit of light entertainment as we celebrate the season together,”
“And it wouldn’t be the festive season without Kevin the Carrot on our TV screens, and this year’s Yuletide performance is sure to get the nation shouting ‘KEVIN!’ as we welcome him back for the seventh year.”
