Karl Lagerfeld and Cara Delevigne avatars take over Times Square

The late German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld and model Cara Delevigne have beamed into New York’s Times Square in avatar form as part of a futuristic 3D digital billboard.

The prominent immersive video depicts the artist-muse pair in a digital playground to celebrate the launch of ‘Cara Loves Karl’,  a gender-neutral joint fashion collection curated by the duo.

Bringing both larger-than-life figures to the big screen, the experiential campaign depicts Lagerfeld – instantly recognizable in his outsize sunglasses, suit and tie – on the giant screen. The former creative director of Chanel then dissolves in a Terminator-style splash of liquid metal to be joined by an animated Delevigne, dressed in a tuxedo gilet drawn from the collection.

Pier Paolo Righi, chief executive officer of Karl Lagerfeld, said: “The cutting-edge ‘Cara Loves Karl’ campaign not only reflects our passion for digital innovation, it also beautifully celebrates the special relationship that Cara and Karl shared. In line with our ongoing digital evolution, we are incredibly excited to see the campaign illuminate such an iconic location as Times Square.”

Lagerfeld and Delevigne promise to carry their friendship into business by encapsulating their personalities in the new collection, which includes a variety of threads and accessories suitable for all sizes and genders.

Lagerfeld, a giant of the fashion industry, passed away in Paris in 2019.
