What do the terms ’geriatric mom’, ’incompetent cervix’ and ’habitual aborter’ all have in common? They’re all outdated, subtly sexist vocabulary that women experience throughout fertility and motherhood.
Peanut – an app connecting women across fertility and motherhood – is drawing attention to these outdated terminologies with its #RenamingRevolution.
The viral campaign started with celeb Chrissy Teigen, who stepped in to offer her support after she spotted someone on Peanut sharing their experience of being called a geriatric mother by their doctor. Since experiencing a miscarriage last year, she has been celebrated for talking so candidly about the subject.
Following the interaction on Peanut’s app, Teigen took to Twitter to share her thoughts on harmful terminologies. The discussion sparked a viral conversation about hurtful and archaic medical terms and it all snowballed from there.
Recognizing this was a bigger issue at hand, Peanut reached out to its community to ask what they felt about how language was used throughout all stages of motherhood, which inspired it to create a whole new glossary of terms.
The glossary was created with expert panelists including celebrated author and language scholar Amanda Montell, marriage and family therapy doctor Dr Viviana Coles, reproductive and maternal mental health psychologist Dr Jessica Zucker and OB-GYN doctor, surgeon and founder of HerMD Dr Somi Javaid.
The glossary can be found on Peanut’s site and it is available as a reference for anyone to use when talking to women about their experiences, with the aim of creating a stigma-free future that empowers women.
Those eager to get their hands on a copy can request one online. Peanut will also send out printed copies to clinics and classes to get the word out.
