Facebook Singapore and Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority have partnered for the second year running, to mentor video creators in Singapore. The collaboration is called the Facebook Creator Lab Singapore which aims to create a pipeline of homegrown original talent who will use Facebook Watch, the video destination on the social networking site.
Applications to be part of Facebook Creator Lab Singapore can be submitted till January 31 2020. Up to five candidates will be selected, and receive support from both IMDA and Facebook to improve the quality of their content and help them monetise it on the platform.
IMDA chief industry development officer Howie Lau said: “Seeing the initial success has been a motivation to say let us do more and so I’m excited to announce the second round.”
Speaking about Watch, Facebook head of entertainment partnerships for Asia-Pacific Saurabh Doshi said: “We want it to be a destination for videos – and not just a library.
“We are trying to create a social experience around Watch – allowing people to follow creatives they are passionate about, start conversations with friends and families and even share stories. Videos are a great way to connect and we have built products and features to help social behaviour.”
Doshi believed that Watch would allow people to forge connections beyond their existing social groups to people interested in the same subjects. He said: “The mission of every team member on Watch is how do we create experience and sense of belonging on video?”
He said the platform was still gaining traction and had 720 million viewers – defined as people who spent at least a minute on Watch per month. Watch Parties with multiple people viewing and commenting on the same video were growing with over 12 million of these having taken place so far.
In Asia, Watch had original programming from creators like NAS Daily and five programmes from MTV, besides bagging digital content rights for key cricket properties in India.
