Letgo, a fast-growing app where people can buy and sell locally, is preaching “less stuff, more living” in its ‘Live and letgo’ campaign.
The aim is to show how simple it is to transform everything you don’t need around your home into things, experiences, and adventures that move you. With help from Droga5 and Adult Swim stars Tim & Eric (comedians Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim), letgo is helping Americans rethink their unhealthy relationships with their extra stuff. The comedy duo directed letgo’s three new ads in their signature oddly endearing style.
In one, a guy hanging with his friends tries to buy a round of drinks with a lawnmower. The bartender points to a sign that says “No lawnmowers, money only” and suggests the guy sell it on letgo. Another finds a family trying to barter a piano for a vacation stay, while a third sees a man crash through a jewelry store window as he tries to trade his pickup truck for a diamond ring.
“The idea behind ‘Live and letgo’ is that the guitar you haven’t touched since college could easily be a flight to Miami with your best friend, and the skis you never needed anyway could be pottery classes,” said letgo cofounder Alec Oxenford. “A typical home is overflowing with thousands of dollars in extra stuff that just sits there – unused, unloved, and unenjoyed. We’re helping people discover the potential in all those things to fund new, more fulfilling experiences.”
According to the company, letgo users sell billions of dollars worth of items they don’t need every month – from headphones to SUVs. Letgo is using innovations such as real-time image recognition and video listings to make secondhand e-commerce a much larger part of the sharing economy. The new campaign follows a milestone-filled year for the startup, which recently raised $500m of new funding from Naspers and passed 100m downloads, 400m listings, and 6bn messages between users worldwide.
